The celebration of art and culture at the second edition of the ABC Art Baja festival comes to an end

The ABC Art Baja festival has successfully concluded its second edition, bringing a variety of artistic activities to La Paz, San José, Todos Santos, and adding two new venues this year: Tijuana and Ensenada.

With the participation of more than 50 artistic projects, this cultural event is consolidated as a relevant point in the region, seeking to foster the community and promote culture in Baja California and Baja California Sur.

Each venue hosted a series of experiences and exhibitions related to art, culture, music and gastronomy in local spaces. Public squares were transformed with notable artistic interventions, such as the installation of pieces such as 'Quetzalcóatl' by artist Leyla Brashka, 'Papayas to the moon' by Alejandro Glatt, 'Squared Water and Cement Mound' by Goga Trascierra and 'A Love Letter to Loss' by Charlotte Hacker-Muller.

Likewise, events such as the Art Walk at the La Paz boardwalk kiosk were held, which exhibited works by more than 20 local artists. Murals were also made in public spaces, highlighting the works of by Aurora Covarrubias in San Jose and Elti Alejandro, Cesar Perales and Callie Herd in Todos Santos.

Within the framework of the festival, PATIO BY Z was also presented.ONAMACO, a program of outdoor artistic interventions in the Puerto Los Cabos Sculpture Garden, which included sculptures, performances and ephemeral pieces in dialogue with the natural environment that addressed topics such as: the history of whale hunting ('Migrante', Beatriz Cortez); a workshop in collaboration with children to create the world they want ('Bordando sueños', Adriana); the plastic waste crisis in San José ('Lado Oscuro: Plástico', Chris Wyrick); the problem of overexploitation of the totoaba, a fish endemic to the Gulf of California ('The lucky Totoaba', Miguel Fernández de Castro); the relationship between the body and space, nature and the desert in the context of the virtual era in which we are currently immersed ('Ilusiones tangibles', Manuel Lozano).

“The patio is the place where sculptures, performances, ephemeral pieces, workshops or community projects converge, a space that breathes territory, nature and culture.” Lena Solà Nogué curator of PATIO BY ZONAMACO.

“Curating a project like PATIO BY ZⓈONAMACO always represents a challenge and, at the same time, a privilege. Working with artists to carry out specific projects in such a unique environment as Baja California is a unique task. The Puerto Los Cabos Sculpture Garden, where PATIO takes place, is a natural space that connects with the historical, geographical context and the natural environment of Baja California.

This curatorial process is different and very significant. The experience has been extremely enriching; the artists have addressed issues of great relevance today, and I am very satisfied with the development of the project. “ Juan Canela curator of PATIO BY ZⓈONAMACO

Art Baja offered a total 129 activities over 8 weeks in its five venues, while PATIO BY ZONAMACO exhibited more than 20 pieces in the landscape of the Puerto Los Cabos Sculpture Garden.

The ABC Art Baja festival thanks all the venues that participated in this second edition, as well as the artists of PATIO BY ZONAMACO. We also extend our thanks to the Baja California Sur authorities for their support, to the Los Cabos Trust for their collaboration in dissemination, and to our allies and sponsors: Palm Foundation, Tequila 1800, Mini Cooper, Cerveza Charro, Alfredo Ginocchio Gallery Los Cabos, Artsy Nights, Zunordinary, Hotel El Ganzo and Puerto Los Cabos Sculpture Garden, as well as our media partners.
